Frequently Asked Questions

Understanding Psychiatry

Many people wonder what psychiatry involves or whether it’s the right choice for them. Here, I'll answers common questions about how psychiatric care works, how it differs from therapy, and how medication fits into treatment.

What’s the difference between a psychiatrist, a psychologist, and a therapist?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in mental health. Because Dr. Alonso is a physician, she can prescribe medication when it’s appropriate, but her care also goes beyond medication.

Psychologists and therapists provide talk therapy but don’t prescribe medications. Often, patients benefit from a combination of both therapy and medical treatment working together.

How do I know if psychiatry could help me?

If your mood, sleep, anxiety, or focus have been affecting your relationships, work, or sense of self for more than a few weeks, psychiatry can help you understand what’s happening and what may help. Treatment isn’t just for crisis; it’s for anyone ready to feel better and find balance again.

Is psychiatry just “talking about feelings”?

Conversations are part of care, but psychiatry also involves evaluating biological, psychological, and social factors that affect your well-being. Dr. Alonso looks at the full picture, such as your medical history, stressors, and goals, to create a plan grounded in science and empathy.

Do I need to take medication if I see a psychiatrist?

Not necessarily. Some people benefit from therapy alone, others from medication, and many from both. Dr. Alonso works collaboratively to decide what’s right for you.

Dr. Alonso’s Approach to Care

Every psychiatrist practices differently. Here, you’ll learn more about Dr. Alonso’s approach, the types of conditions she treats, and what to expect when you meet for the first time.

What makes your approach different?

I listen carefully and treat each person as a whole, not a list of symptoms. My care combines evidence-based medicine with attention to lifestyle factors like nutrition, sleep, and stress. I value collaboration, not quick fixes.

What kinds of conditions do you treat?

I treat adults 18 and older for mood and anxiety disorders, trauma-related conditions, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and late-life mood or cognitive concerns.

Do you offer therapy or only medication management?

Both, depending on your needs. I provide supportive therapy informed by psychodynamic and interpersonal approaches. When specialized or long-term therapy is best, I partner with trusted local therapists to coordinate care.

What can I expect during my first visit?

Before your appointment, you’ll be asked to complete intake forms so I can better understand your history and concerns.

During the visit, I’ll review your history, listen carefully to your concerns, and work with you to create a personalized treatment plan. You’ll have time to ask questions and discuss next steps together.

Your initial appointment lasts up to 60 minutes.

How often will I need follow-up visits?

Follow-up frequency is personalized and depends on your treatment plan. I’ll work with you to determine the schedule that best supports your care.
